Sailing Towards Sustainable Energy: NTPC’s Simhadri Solar Power Triumph

In a significant stride towards sustainable energy generation, India’s leading state-run electricity producer, NTPC Limited, marked a historic moment with the commencement of commercial operations at its Simhadri thermal station in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. This remarkable achievement was celebrated with the commissioning of a 15 MW floating solar PV project, furtherenhancing the facility’s total installed capacity to an impressive 25 MW.

NTPC proudly announced, “Consequent upon the successful commissioning of 15 MW capacity, Simhadri Floating Solar PV Project at Simhadri, Andhra Pradesh is hereby declared on commercial operation w.e.f. 10:00 AM of August 21, 2021,” in an official statement.

This remarkable floating solar project is a shining example of India’s commitment to harnessing renewable energy sources. It operates under the Flexibilisation Scheme, a visionary initiative introduced by the Government of India in 2018 to promote clean energy generation. What sets this project apart is its innovative anchoring design, strategically situated across an expansive 75-acre area within an RW reservoir.

The potential of this floating solar endeavor is truly staggering. With over 1 lakh solar PV modules in place, it has the capability not only to illuminate approximately 7,000 households but also to mitigate the emission of at least 46,000 tons of CO2e annually throughout its operational lifespan. This is a remarkable contribution to reducing our carbon footprint and combatting climate change, aligning perfectly with the nation’s sustainability goals.

Furthermore, this ambitious project is anticipated to have a profound impact on water conservation. It is projected to save a staggering 1,364 million liters of water every year, an amount sufficient to meet the annual water requirements of 6,700 households. This demonstrates the holistic approach towards resource management and environmental stewardship that is an integral part of the project’s vision.

In sum, NTPC’s Simhadri Floating Solar PV Project represents a major milestone in India’s renewable energy landscape. Not only does it signify a step towards energy self-sufficiency, but it also exemplifies the country’s dedication to cleaner, greener power generation. This monumental achievement is not only about harnessing the power of the sun; it’s about harnessing the power of
innovation, sustainability, and a brighter, cleaner future for India and the world.
